Editor's review
This program creates dynamic reports on-the-fly. It allows you to dig as deep into your log files as you need to. Explore your site, proxy or other logs without limits.
Pros: Most log analyzers work on a predictable pattern. To find out what’s happening on your web site, proxy server or the firewall you let the data be analyzed by a log analyzer.
Predictably, they parse the log file and build reports by grouping or filtering data thus extracted. Good analyzers among the breed are able to create multi level and cross linked reports. A page view report may let you drill down from a page name to visitors on the page and the affiliates that forwarded these visitors. These usually are statically linked and are pre-built.
This analyzer on the other hand is able to let the users explore data freely. This application is able to create reports on the fly and drill down to details as much as you need to. Simply right-click a row in any report, whether it`s a page, a host, a user, a search engine or anything else and choose from a list of sub-reports available for this item. For example, in a page views report you can select a certain page and get a list of its visitors, their paths across the site, countries and cities these visitors are from, referring sites, keywords that the visitors used in search engines to find this page and so on.
Web Log Explorer is capable of analyzing 25 odd log formats available on the web. Tests with popular web server programs, web proxies, firewalls and media broadcasters gives the users the confidence that it can, in fact, do so. Automatic recognition of the file format, multiple log processing, uncompressing compressed ones and ability to download logs from various sources are built in features. Sources could be the web, a FTP site, ODBC compliant database etc.
Web Log Explorer also allows you to filter visits by search engine robots. You can switch the program into "All requests", "Without spiders" and "Spiders only" modes with the click of a button.
Cons: No problems detected.
Overall: Quite good functionality, fairly easy to use interface makes the application a very good example of its kind. It is rated at 3 stars.
